HOW CAN WE KNOW GOD EXISTS?

Can we know God really exists? Yes, we can know that He exists. How can we know that He exists? We can know in two ways—through reason and through the revelation of God in His book, the Bible. This article will consider the ways we can know God exists through reason.

Is it reasonable to say that we can know that God exists through reason? Yes, even scientists say so. Even atheists say so. Even scientists who are atheists say so. However, many don’t believe that reason is sufficient for them to believe that there is a God. A good many of them are honest enough to say that they do not believe in God because they don’t want to. Many say that they don’t want to accept God’s revelation of Himself because they do not want to submit to what God requires of them. They are like the many religious leaders of Jesus’ time who saw the miracles He did, but still would not believe that Jesus was the Son of God.

But today’s foremost scientific atheist of the 20th and 21st century is no longer an atheist. Anthony Flew, of England, came to America in 1976 and debated Brother Tom Warren. Flew, in Jan 2004, attributed his change to Gary Habermas of Liberty University, and publicly stated that he now believed in God. What caused him to change his mind? Reason.

The more he looked into the scientific knowledge concerning the DNA structure of the human body, the more he began to see the reasoning behind what many today call Intelligent Design. The entire universe as well as the DNA structure of the human body demands the conclusion of an Intelligent Designer. That Intelligent Designer was God.

We can know there is a God in these two ways. We can know through reasoning upon the things we see in creation though we cannot see God, and we can know by the revelation God has given us of Himself in His book, the Bible. Yes, God has revealed Himself to us in these two ways.

In the previous article on Who Is God? I made mention of the fact that those who have studied the worlds different races and cultures found that people of all time believed in someone they called god or that may have had more than one god.

People of all time, of all races and cultures have desired to know, is there a God? They desire to know so that they may worship Him.

From these facts have come what some call The General Argument for the existence of God. The General Argument for the existence of God is based on the universal belief in God and the universal religious instinct of mankind. (This argument is also called the Intuitional Argument).

Another related argument for the existence of God is that since man can conceive of a supreme being, God must exist outside the human mind. It is declared that God is that than which nothing greater can be conceived. (This argument is called the Ontological Argument).

Then there is the moral argument that says that within all people there is the capacity of knowing right from wrong. Animals do not have moral qualities. Our sense of “ought” is not the result of education in its early stages, or evolution. Our sense of “ought” comes from within, and resides in those qualities that God gave to man, whom He created in His own image.

An argument based on the study of the universe is that its existence is evidence of a creator. For every effect there must be an adequate cause. Since nothing comes from nothing and since the universe is something, then something or someone must have produced the universe. This is called the Cosmological Argument.

The next argument comes from the scientific observation that movement within the universe exists. There is no such thing as perpetual motion. Someone or something had to start the motion. But, because many scientists don’t want to accept God and creation, they speak of this as a cosmic explosion called “The Big Bang theory” and call it scientific. The next argument comes from the scientific law of thermodynamics. The law of thermodynamics indicate that the universe is slowing down, decelerating, and has been since it was created.

From the things that God created we can learn something of Him. “Nature speaks to people everywhere.” We can know that God exists because we can see the signposts, which are indications that there is a God, in everything He created.

We have on things made in America, “Made in USA.” Things from other countries, “Made in China,” or “Japan” or some other country.

God’s signposts say, “Made by God.” There are some things that man cannot make. Man cannot make a single thing that has God’s signpost on it.

Can man make a sun, a moon or stars, an ocean, or pathways in the sea? Man is now trying to create life in a test tube. But only life can produce life. Lifeless matter cannot design or plan. Lifeless matter has no intelligence. The universe has the marks of intelligence design.

The world is filled with design and order. There must be a designer and the designer a plan. God is the designer and planner of the universe.

The fundamental law of science states that for every material effect, there must be a cause. One does not get a painting without a painter, a poem without a poet, a law without a lawgiver. The universe is here, what caused it? Man cannot tell us.

Consider the design of the universe: If the sun was larger or closer to the earth everything would burn up. If further away, we would freeze to death. The sun is just the right distance away. That didn’t happen by chance.

The moon is some 240,000 miles from the earth. If it were closer, twice a day there would be 35-50 ft high tidal waves, washing upon the shores. That didn’t happen by chance.

The earth rotates around the sun at 19 miles per second creating seasons of the year. If its rotation was half that, each season would be doubled in length causing, each season, such summer heat and harsh cold that not enough food could be grown. If its rotation was doubled, no season would be long enough to grow enough food. That didn’t happen by chance.

The mathematical chances of these things happening by chance are impossible. If there was some so-called cosmic explosion, there would have first had to be matter that existed, and energy that existed, and something that set off that explosion. But scientists now admit that before their “Big Bang,” nothing existed.

Remember, there never has been and there never can be any effect without a cause. If there was nothing, there would always be nothing. There has to be an adequate cause.

Nothing cannot produce something. But God existed.

There has to be something in order for something else to be produced. God was that “something.” Every effect has an adequate cause. Something cannot come from nothing. God was that adequate cause.

The existence of a house points to a builder. The existence of a painting, points to a painter. The existence of the Universe points to a builder, a designer, an intelligent designer. All nature bears testimony to the Divine Existence of God, the Intelligent Designer.

Let us suppose that we go into a printing shop and see the thousands of upper and lower case letters used in printing. The next morning we hear of an explosion in that printing shop and we go to look at the damage done. But instead of their being any damage to see, what we see is all the letters arranged in order, spelling out “The Declaration of Independence.”

Let us suppose that we go by a printing shop next door to a pet shop that sells nothing but monkeys. The next day we hear that the monkeys had gotten loose during the night and decide to hold up in the print shop. We go by to see this sight and what do we see, not a mess as could be expected, but, during the night these monkeys had taken those thousands of letters used in printing, and arranged them in order, spelling out the Constitution of the United States.

Those things are just as reasonable for us to believe as are the things that those who are believers in evolution would have us believe. Not reasonable at all.

There is a God. We can know that He exists from reasoning on the things He made and we can know who He is from His book, the Bible, in which He has revealed Himself to us.

That’s why we assemble every Sunday morning, to worship our God. ~ A
