There is a God. Who is He? What do you know about Him? Let me tell you a little of what I’ve learned about Him.
God is the Supreme Being. He is a Being above all other beings. He is the highest of all beings. He is the greatest of all beings. We are human being. God is a supremely great Being; the Supreme Being.
I have read many times that people who specialize in the study of the world’s different races and their cultures, past and present, have never found any people anywhere in the world that did not believe in someone they called god or who had many gods.
For those of you who would like to know, the people who do these studies are called anthropologists. Every single culture found by those who study the world’s different cultures, have found that all cultures have believed in some god or gods.
This shows that there is something in the nature of all people that draws them to religion in some form. There is something that is within human beings; a curiosity; a desire to know if there is a God. Who is He? What is He like? How can He be pleased so that I will benefit and be blessed
by this God, and have a better life? If there is a God, that’s what I want to know. These are thoughts that arise in every culture.
Other thoughts may be, what am I? Am I one of the animals? I don’t look like any of them. How did I get here? Is there any purpose in life? What happens when I die? Mankind through the ages has wanted to know the answers, and so has tried to find the answers. No man can provide the answers. God alone can answer those questions.
Because all cultures have been drawn to seek God, but many have not found Him, they have created in their minds what they imagine God to be. This has brought about many religions in the world.
There is a great difference between Christianity and other world religions. One major difference, noted by those who study different religions, is that, among most world religions they found mankind seeking God and not finding Him. But in Christianity, we have God seeking mankind.
There is only one person that can tell us the answers to the questions that every race and culture has always wanted to know – and that is God Himself. There is only one God that can give us the answers. There is no other god who can. Is there a God or are their gods? If there are gods, they cannot answer any of the questions we want to know (John 10:34, 35). Only God can give us the answers.
God wants people to know who He is, what He has done for them, and how much He loves them. God, the Supreme Being, is the God of Creation. He is our Maker; our Creator. And, He is the creator of all things. He is the God of Heaven and Earth.
Yes, God wants people to know who He is. In most world religions that is impossible. That’s why some worshippers in ancient Athens, Greece, put up an idol and dedicated it “To The Unknown God” that they might worship Him.
One may ask, “Where did God come from?” “Who created Him?” I was asked once, who created God? I explained that God was not created. He has always existed. To say that He has always existed is to say that He has always lived. He was not born as we are. God had no beginning and He will never die.
That’s a great mystery. For a person to exist, He must live. We don’t know anything or anyone else that has always existed; that has always lived. But, that’s one of the reasons that the one we call God is God, because he has always existed. He wasn’t born as we are, and He’ll never die as we do.
Our God is not human like us. He doesn’t have a body of flesh and bones, in spite of what Mormons teach (Doctrines and Covenants, Sec. 130:22). Our God is a spirit being. That’s another mystery. None of us has ever seen a spirit. You can’t see a spirit being. No one has ever seen God, but we can see what God has done.
We can see this earth and the things on it. We can look up into the heavens and see the moon and stars at night. We can wake up in the morning and see the sunlight that comes from the sun by which God warms the earth so that things can grow. We see those things all around us. We walk on grass, past flowers, and shrubs and trees. We look around and see dogs and cats. We go to the country and see cows and horses and chickens and pigs. God made it all. And, He made us. That’s why we call Him our Maker; our Creator.
Our Creator made the oceans and the seas. He
made the mountains. And, when God finished making all in the heavens and on earth, the birds of the air and the fish of the sea, the cattle and all the other animals, God made the first man and called him Adam. Is man an animal being? No. God made the animals first, and then He made man. They are animal beings. We are human beings. God made both, but He didn’t make us animals.
To show Adam how much He loved him, God planted a garden paradise for Adam to live in. Every thing that Adam needed was in this garden, except one thing, and God took care of that. He provided a wife for Adam. Adam called her Eve.
Now, how could God do all these things? We could say, because He is God – and that would be right, but that doesn’t explain much, does it? God is not limited as we are. There are only certain things that we can do, and try as we might, and want to as much as we want to, we can’t do any more. We are limited in our power, but God has the power to do anything He wants to do. God is all-powerful.
Because God is a Spirit, He is not limited to one place as we are, in spite of what Mormons teach (Doctrines and Covenants, Sec. 130:22). We can be in but one place at a time. God can be anywhere and everywhere He wants to be at any time. That’s a great mystery too, isn’t it?
Neither is God limited in knowledge as we are. We are born not having any knowledge. We have to learn everything we learn from others who have learned things. But, God knows all things. He is not limited in His knowledge. He is the source of all knowledge and wisdom. He has always had the knowledge and the power to do anything He wanted to do, and so, when He decided to create the heavens and the earth, He knew just how to do it and had the power to do it. We are limited in our power, but God is not.
Since God created all things, we can understand that God’s power is supreme. The reason we call Him the Supreme Being is that His power goes beyond the power of any other being and it is unlimited. Because we recognize this, we can know that we can truly trust Him. Creation is the most significant act of God that sets God apart as God (Gatewood, p. 137).
But, there’s one other thing that I want you to know about God. I have told you that God has always existed. That He is Spirit, He is not restricted to being in one place at a time as we are, He is all knowing, He is all powerful. He is the Supreme God. But there is still one thing more I want you to know about God.
God is a God of love. Mankind has always wanted to not only know if there is a God, but also who He is and how He can be pleased, so that he could be benefited; be blessed by God, and have a better life.
As God our Creator was not born or created, but always existed as Spirit, He is not limited to being in just one place, but everywhere, and He has unlimited power and knowledge. He is also unlimited in His love. He loves us as no human being can love. He loves us more than even our Mother and Father, Sister, or Brother. Can you imagine such great love? God is love.
How has He showed that love for us? He showed His love by creating this world for us. Scientists have not learned of any other suitable place in the universe for humans to live.
He showed His love for us by creating us in His spiritual image. He gave us a spirit, with characteristics that are like His characteristics, which we can develop and become more and more like Him.
He showed His love by creating a garden paradise for the first man and woman and providing for their every need. He continues still, providing all the material things we need here on earth, and blessing us more than we deserve.
He loves us so much that He wants us to be with Him in His heavenly home when we die. He wants us to live with him for all eternity, where there is no time and there is no end to life.
Now, you might be wondering, how can I know these things? How can I say all these things? Because God has revealed some of these things to us in nature, and He revealed all of them to us in that book which comes from Him; the Bible.
He has revealed Himself to us and how we may please Him, be blessed by Him. and receive His matchless, unconditional love, and have a better life here on this earth and forever in heaven.
Those who know a little more about God and what He has revealed to us in His book, the Bible, know that He loves us so much that He gave His only begotten Son to die for our sins. God wants all people to know this.
Now, I hope that you have learned a little more about God, and have come to have higher thoughts of Him than ever before. The more we learn of God, the more we can appreciate Him for who He is, what He is, and how He can be pleased so that we will benefit and be blessed by Him and have a better life. As we continue to learn about God, we will learn how we got here, our purpose in life, and what happens when we die.
But isn’t it great to know that God is the Supreme Being, the greatest of all beings, who has always lived and will live forever? Our God is a Spirit who is not limited to being in one place and can be with us wherever we are. Our God is the source of all knowledge and wisdom and knows all things. Our God is all powerful, unlimited in all these things, and is our Creator and the Creator of all things in heaven and on earth.
Isn’t it great to know that we are not one of the animals of God’s creation? And isn’t it great to know how much God loves us?
Our God is a God of love, who has shown His love to those of all past ages, through creating the world on which the first humans could live, creating them in His spiritual image, giving us a living spirit, providing all with every material blessing needed, and One who wants us to be with Him in His heavenly home when we die. He wants us to live with Him for all eternity, where there is no time and there is no end to life.~ A
